The results of the newly minted National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy, or NAPLAN, have shown that one in 10 school students around Australia have failed to meet the minimum national standards in literacy, with five percent of students not achieving a minimum level in maths.
The results show that students in Victoria, New South Wales and the ACT performed above the national average - with Western Australia and Queensland performing below expectations.
The results of the NAPLAN tests, which were done in May for the first time, were released on the internet. Parents will receive individual reports starting Next Monday.
